October 12, 2003 was a crisp, clear, temperate Fall day in NYC and the same sort of day you might find in the Campania Region of Italy. But, that particular day was the Columbus Day Parade and everyone got a taste of both worlds for a few hours as they marched up Fifth Avenue from 42nd Street to 79th Street dressed as Pulcinelle, Mermaids and Cavemen and Cavewomen.
The parade is a tribute to all that is Italian and all that is
Italian-American: Food, wine, culture, romance, architecture, music,
literature, opera and of course the Arts. A group of actors from Tsu
Tsu Unlimited came out that day with dignitaries from across the
Atlantic Ocean to celebrate all that is Italian - especially the Arts.
One of the largest cities in the Campania Region is Napoli or Naples in
English. Some were on floats as cavemen and cavewomen and two were
mermaids from the deep blue sea. Most of the people were representing
Campania as the Pulcinella a character familiar to every Napolitano. It
is the court jester, the clown or the merrymaker so everyone knew what
their roles were. It would be a fun day. After all the white tunics,
pants, tall pointed hats and black masks were distributed, everyone was
dressed and off.
The group walked behind the Campania Banner and the President of Campania Antonio Bassolino. Hundreds of people along the sidelines were thrilled to see the president and the familiar Pulcinella characters.
The Columbus Day Citizen's Foundation (who we were all representing), is an education-oriented foundation that promotes Italian and American learning. It is especially happy to preserve Italian-American culture. The Foundation champions philanthropic causes and is determined to make a difference in the lives of people everywhere. Many scholarships are offered to promising youth to foster this ideal. President of the foundation, Lawrence Auriana had renowned Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli acting as the Grand Marshall. He also had 20 or more Ducati Racing bikes that escorted the famous fashion designer- As if there isn't enough noise in Manhattan on a parade day! And unless you were deaf, somewhere out of the city, or just not watching television you know the rest.
Several men from the Columbus Day Citizen's Foundation marched with us as well. Mr. Louis Tallarini, GENERAL CHAIRMAN Mr. Alfred Catalanotto & Mr. Anthony Charles, PARADE CHAIRMEN They should be acknowledged for their time and consideration and allowing us to represent Campania in the parade.
